Located in Pleiku city the small MOON’S COFEE FARM feels just like an oasis that appears in front of you as you step a bit off the main road.
First thing you see is the tiny (though spacious) little house designed and painted in bright yellow colors by Ms. Thuy and her helpers at the farm!
As Ms. Thuy’s is a small holder, the farm labor is mainly spread among the family members and a few staff members who help during the harvesting season.
After sharing a delicious home-cooked lunch Ms. Thuy showed around the farm and explained many things that make the coffee from Moon’s Coffee farm as unique…
Since Ms. Thuy has taken over the processes at the farm, the efforts have been mainly focused around improving the quality of the soil. “These tiny seedlings (vetiver) were brought over from India. They help to keep the root system of the coffee trees hydrated during the dry season,” she explained. “Also, we grow lot of bananas here,” continues Ms. Thuy. The big and strong banana trees contribute to regenerating the soil in many ways. Firstly, banana leaves are one of the easiest parts to compost. They break down within the compost to provide a nutrient-rich additive for garden soil. Another thing is that the banana stem and leaf is an organic fertilizer. It has the effects of degrading pesticide residues, improving soil and promoting plant growth.
In fact, Ms. Thuy had planted many other fruits around and hopes to have the harvest from them in the nearest years. “Having a multi-crop is also good for the soil and for the budget! As then you have everything you need just right at the farm!”. Among other plants there are avocado, pepper and durian trees grown here together with coffee.
Here’s another farming tip from Ms. Thuy: “The grass should be present everywhere all over the ground. We try to keep it at a medium height all year round. It helps to protect the soil from excessive sunlight and harsh rains as well”.
Thank you, Ms. Thuy for the wonderful time we spent here! We hope to be back in the nearest future!
